Physiotherapy for the shoulder, elbow and wrist — Rydułtowy

For shoulder, elbow or wrist pain, a physiotherapist in Rydułtowy examines the movement and strength of your arm, assesses which structures may be causing the pain and chooses the therapy: manual techniques, exercises and, for long-standing tendon overload, also shockwave therapy or TECAR. A consultation costs 180 PLN. Visits are private, with no referral needed and not covered by NFZ (the Polish public health fund).

Below we describe the upper-limb problems patients most often come to the clinic with, when you need to see a doctor first and which treatments may be suitable.

In brief

  • Physiotherapy consultation: 180 PLN, manual therapy: 180 PLN.
  • Shockwave therapy costs 100 PLN, or 200 PLN combined with manual therapy.
  • Manual therapy with kinesio taping: 190 PLN.
  • The clinic is open Mon–Fri 7:00–20:00, ul. Strzelców Bytomskich 11, Rydułtowy.

When should you see a doctor or go to A&E (SOR) first?

  • sudden shoulder pain, especially in the left shoulder, with shortness of breath, chest tightness, sweating or jaw pain — call 112;
  • a fall or injury after which the joint looks different from the healthy one or you cannot raise your arm;
  • fever, redness, warmth and marked swelling of a joint;
  • numbness or weakness of the whole arm, especially with neck pain;
  • sudden swelling of the whole limb or a change in its colour;
  • night pain that does not depend on position, with unintended weight loss.

What shoulder and elbow problems do patients come with?

Most often it is shoulder pain when raising the arm or reaching behind the back, a stiff and painful shoulder known as frozen shoulder, pain on the outer side of the elbow when gripping, called tennis elbow, and numb fingers due to carpal tunnel syndrome. Some of these problems are linked to overload at work, while others appear for no obvious reason, usually after the age of 40.

Each of these problems is managed differently, so the first step is an examination. With carpal tunnel symptoms and a numb hand, the physiotherapist also checks the neck (cervical spine), as the symptoms may come from higher up. If a tendon injury or fracture is suspected, they refer you to a doctor for diagnosis.

What does shoulder and elbow therapy at the clinic involve?

Therapy usually combines the physiotherapist’s hands-on work with exercises the patient does between visits. For long-standing tendon overload, e.g. tennis elbow or calcification in the shoulder, the physiotherapist may suggest shockwave therapy, and TECAR for stiffness and muscle tension. Kinesio taping can provide support while you return to everyday activities. The number of visits is set individually.

Exercises are progressed step by step: from pain-free range of movement to strengthening the muscles that stabilise the shoulder blade and forearm. The physiotherapist also advises how to change the position of your hands and arms at work to reduce overload.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an ultrasound scan before a visit for shoulder pain?

No, imaging is not required for your first visit to a physiotherapist. If you have an ultrasound or MRI result for your shoulder, bring it, as it helps with planning therapy. If the examination shows that further tests are needed, e.g. when a torn tendon is suspected, the physiotherapist will suggest seeing an orthopaedic doctor before continuing therapy.

Does shockwave therapy hurt with tennis elbow?

Shockwave therapy can be uncomfortable, especially at the most tender spot where the tendon attaches. The physiotherapist adjusts the intensity to what the patient can tolerate and can lower it during the treatment. The area may be tender for a while afterwards. Whether shockwave therapy is appropriate is decided after the examination.

Can I exercise when my shoulder hurts?

Usually yes, but within a range that does not clearly increase the pain and as advised by the physiotherapist. Keeping the shoulder completely still tends to make it stiffer. Exercises are matched to the stage of the problem, and their intensity is increased gradually. If the pain gets worse or spreads, stop the exercise and talk to your physiotherapist.

How much does tennis elbow therapy cost?

The cost depends on the treatments chosen. A consultation costs 180 PLN, manual therapy 180 PLN, shockwave therapy alone 100 PLN, and manual therapy with shockwave 200 PLN. The physiotherapist sets the number of visits individually after the examination. The clinic sees patients privately only, with no NFZ contract.
