When should you see a doctor first?
Before starting therapy, it is best to take your child to a doctor (a paediatrician or an orthopaedic specialist) first if:
- you notice uneven shoulders, shoulder blades or waist, and your child has not yet been examined by a doctor;
- the curve is clearly getting worse, especially during a growth spurt;
- the back hurts at night or at rest, or the pain comes with a fever or weight loss;
- there is numbness or weakness in the legs, problems with walking or problems passing urine;
- the back pain started after a fall or an injury.
It is the doctor who orders an X-ray, assesses the Cobb angle and decides whether a brace or further tests are needed. The physiotherapist follows these recommendations.
What does scoliosis therapy for children at the clinic involve?
At the first visit, the physiotherapist talks with the parent, reviews the X-ray report and the doctor’s recommendations, and looks at the child’s posture when standing, sitting and moving. They then choose exercises suited to the type of curve and the child’s age. Exercises at home are essential, so the parent receives guidance on how to make sure they are done between visits.
The exercises teach the child how to position the body, how to breathe and how to control posture in everyday positions, for example at a desk. At the following visits the therapist checks how the child does the exercises and adjusts the plan. If the child wears a brace, therapy takes into account the doctor’s recommendations on how long it should be worn.
At the clinic we can also carry out a podoscope foot test, which shows how pressure is distributed across the foot, and balance exercises on a balance platform.

A single comprehensive visit costs 180 PLN. For scoliosis therapy there are also packages that include a consultation: 4 visits for 650 PLN to be used within a month, 8 visits for 1 150 PLN within 2 months and 12 visits for 1 500 PLN within 3 months.
Whether a package is the right choice for your child is worth discussing with the physiotherapist after the first assessment. The number and frequency of visits depend on the type of curve, the child’s age and the doctor’s recommendations.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a referral to bring my child to a visit?
For a private visit at the “W zdrowym ciele” clinic, a referral is usually not needed. The clinic has no contract with NFZ, and all visits are paid according to the price list. If your child has a spine X-ray, its report or an orthopaedic specialist’s recommendations, bring them to the first visit, as they help us choose the exercises.
Is the parent present during the visit?
Yes, with children a parent or carer is present during the visit. This is important because scoliosis therapy relies to a large extent on exercises done at home. The parent sees how the child should exercise and gets advice on what to watch for so that the exercises are done correctly.
What should my child wear to the visit?
Comfortable sportswear is best: shorts and a T-shirt or top that can be taken off easily, so that the physiotherapist can look at the back, shoulder blades and pelvic alignment. For the podoscope foot test, the child takes off their socks. It is a good idea to bring comfortable shoes, a bottle of water and any test results your child has.
Are exercises alone enough for scoliosis?
It depends on the size and type of the curve and the child’s age, and this is assessed by a doctor based on an examination and an X-ray. For some curves the doctor recommends a brace, and exercises complement it. The physiotherapist does not decide on a brace, but works with the parents to follow the doctor’s recommendations.
