When should you see a doctor or go to A&E (SOR) first?
- after an injury you cannot put weight on the leg or move the joint, or there is a visible deformity — A&E;
- swelling and bruising build up quickly after the injury;
- after surgery: fever, chills, redness, discharge or the wound opening up;
- swelling, pain and warmth in one calf, shortness of breath or chest pain — see a doctor urgently or call 112;
- numbness, paleness or bluish discolouration of the fingers or toes below a dressing or brace;
- a sudden increase in pain that is not relieved by the prescribed medicines.
When should rehabilitation start after an injury or surgery?
When rehabilitation starts depends on the type of injury or operation and on the doctor’s recommendations. After an ankle sprain, gentle movement is usually introduced early, while after a fracture or surgery physiotherapy begins at the time set by the doctor, e.g. once the cast or brace is removed. The physiotherapist follows the recommendations on weight-bearing and range of movement.
If you are not sure whether it is time for rehabilitation yet, call the clinic and describe your situation. Bring your discharge notes, the surgery report, imaging results and the doctor’s recommendations to your first visit.
What does rehabilitation at the clinic involve?
Therapy consists of exercises to restore range of movement, strength and balance, the physiotherapist’s hands-on work and advice for home. Once the wound has healed, scar therapy can begin, and lymphatic drainage may be used for persistent swelling. Kinesio taping can provide support as you return to everyday activities. The physiotherapist sets the number and frequency of visits individually, depending on your progress.
The aim is to get back to the activities that matter to the patient: climbing stairs, work, sport. The plan changes as you progress, and the physiotherapist will let you know when it is worth having a check-up with your doctor.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a referral for rehabilitation after surgery?
You usually do not need a referral for private rehabilitation at the “W zdrowym ciele” clinic. However, you do need the operating surgeon’s recommendations, as they set out how much weight the operated limb can take and which movements are allowed at each stage. The clinic has no contract with the NFZ; all visits are paid according to the price list.
When can scar therapy start?
Scar therapy only starts once the wound has healed and the stitches are out, when there are no scabs, no oozing and no signs of infection. Before that, the tissues around the wound can be worked on. The timing depends on the type of operation and how it is healing, so the physiotherapist assesses the scar at the visit and, if in doubt, refers you back to the doctor.
After an injury, is the clinic or a home visit better?
The clinic has more equipment and space for exercise, so it is usually the first choice for people who can travel safely. A home visit works well when the patient has difficulty moving around, e.g. after hip surgery or a fracture. Often therapy starts at home and then continues at the clinic.
Will the physiotherapist assess whether a bone has failed to heal?
The physiotherapist does not assess bone healing or make a medical diagnosis, but watches for symptoms that need checking, e.g. increasing pain, swelling or joint instability. In such cases they refer the patient to the doctor in charge of their care. Decisions about weight-bearing and further treatment are made by the doctor on the basis of tests.
