To check whether a physiotherapist is licensed to practise, ask for their PWZFz number (Polish licence to practise as a physiotherapist) and look it up in the National Register of Physiotherapists, kept by the National Chamber of Physiotherapists. The register is public and free: you enter the surname or number and compare the details with the person treating you. Under the 2015 Act, only people entered in the register may practise the profession.
Below we explain what the PWZFz number is, how to use the register step by step, where to find the number and what to do if the result raises doubts.
In brief

What is a PWZFz number?
PWZFz is the number of a physiotherapist’s licence to practise. It is given to a person who has completed a degree in physiotherapy or has other qualifications recognised by the Act, once the professional self-governing body has confirmed their right to practise and entered them in the National Register of Physiotherapists. The number is individual and permanently assigned to one person.
Entry in the register also means membership of the professional body and an obligation to follow its code of ethics and to keep developing professionally. The title “physiotherapist” is protected – it cannot be used by someone who has only completed a course, e.g. in massage or manual therapy.
How to check a physiotherapist in the register step by step?
Checking takes just a moment. Ask the physiotherapist for their PWZFz number or find it on the clinic’s website, then open the National Register of Physiotherapists search tool on the National Chamber of Physiotherapists’ website and enter the number or surname. Check that the first name, surname and number match and that the licence to practise is current.
- Get the number. Ask at reception, during your visit, or look for it on the clinic’s website.
- Open the register. You will find the search tool on the official website of the National Chamber of Physiotherapists.
- Enter the details. Search by PWZFz number or by first name and surname.
- Compare the result. The first name, surname and number must all belong to the same person.
- Check the status. Make sure the licence to practise has not been suspended or has not expired.
Where can you find a physiotherapist’s PWZFz number?
You will most often find the PWZFz number on the clinic’s website in the team description, on the physiotherapist’s stamp, in the records from your visit or on a certificate. If it is not shown anywhere, simply ask – a reliable physiotherapist will give it to you without hesitation. Asking for the number is not rude, just normal caution on the patient’s part, especially before home rehabilitation for a loved one.
This matters particularly when you find a therapist for an elderly parent through an advert or a recommendation. For home physiotherapy from our clinic, a physiotherapist from our team comes to you, and you can check her number before the visit.
What if the physiotherapist is not in the register?
First check for a typo in the surname, whether the person’s surname has changed after marriage and whether you are entering the correct number. If the person is still not listed in the register but introduces themselves as a physiotherapist, ask for an explanation. You can also report the matter to the National Chamber of Physiotherapists, which supervises the practice of the profession.
Remember that not being in the register does not always mean bad intent – a massage therapist or personal trainer does not have to be registered, because these are different professions. The problem is only when someone uses the title of physiotherapist without the right to do so. We describe an example of this kind of difference in our article chiropractic or manual therapy.
When should you see a doctor first?
You can see a physiotherapist privately with no referral needed, but see a doctor first if the pain started after a fall or accident, comes with fever or unexplained weight loss, if you have numbness in the groin area, difficulty passing urine, weakness in an arm or leg, or sudden chest pain or shortness of breath.
If you have symptoms of a stroke or chest pain, call 112. We write more about when a referral is needed in our article do you need a referral to see a physiotherapist.

Frequently asked questions
Does a massage therapist or personal trainer need a PWZFz number?
No. The PWZFz number applies only to physiotherapists. Massage therapists and personal trainers are separate professions that do not have such a register, so the lack of a number does not mean they lack qualifications in their field. However, if someone introduces themselves as a physiotherapist, they should have a PWZFz number and be listed in the National Register of Physiotherapists.
Is there a fee for checking a physiotherapist in the register?
No, checking is free of charge. The National Register of Physiotherapists is public, and the search tool is provided by the National Chamber of Physiotherapists on its official website. You do not need to create an account or give your personal details. Simply enter the physiotherapist’s licence number or their first name and surname and compare the result.
Does the register show a physiotherapist’s courses and specialisations?
The register mainly confirms the licence to practise, not completed courses. It is worth asking directly about training, for example in manual therapy, the McKenzie method or the Bobath concept, or checking it on the clinic’s website. A reliable physiotherapist will be happy to tell you what experience they have in treating your particular problem.
Does a physiotherapist on a home visit also need a PWZFz number?
Yes. The rules are the same at the clinic and in the patient’s home: rehabilitation may only be carried out by a physiotherapist with a licence to practise. At the “W zdrowym ciele” clinic, home visits within 15 km of Rydułtowy are carried out by physiotherapists from our team, whose PWZFz numbers are given on our website.
